It acts through a heterodimeric receptor complex of IL-6R and glycoprotein 130 (gp130), which mediates its effects on immune responses, hematopoiesis, bone metabolism, and cancer progression. IL-6 production is not constitutive but is triggered by factors such as cytokines, lipopolysaccharides, or viral infections. Its diverse effects depend on the target tissues, influencing growth, inhibition, or differentiation.
Due to its involvement in various physiological and pathological processes, IL-6 is a critical biomarker for diagnostic research. Abnormal IL-6 production is often associated with disease progression, making serum level measurement a valuable diagnostic tool.
