Bacterial cellulose (BC), also known as microbial or bacterial nanocellulose, is a naturally occurring polymer synthesized by specific bacteria, notably Acetobacter xylinum. Unlike plant-derived cellulose, BC is distinguished by its exceptional purity, as it lacks hemicellulose, lignin, waxes, and pectins. This purity, combined with its remarkable strength, moldability, and superior water retention capabilities, makes BC a versatile material across various industries, including textiles, cosmetics, food, and medicine.

Key Characteristics of Bacterial Cellulose:

  • Dimensions: Nanofibers measuring between 50 to 100 nanometers in width and exceeding 30 micrometers in length.
  • Surface Chemistry: Presence of hydroxyl groups.
  • Crystalline Structure: Classified as Type I.
